📖 Welcome to Civil Tales by CJH

Yesterday, Tejasri learned that unexpected ground conditions require engineering approval.

Today, the excavation looks perfect...

Until she returns the next morning.

📍 Today: Week 2 • Day 9 – Water in the Pit

📅 Week 2

📍 Day 9 of 42

🎯 Topic: Dewatering During Excavation

"Water never asks permission before entering your excavation."

Day 9 – Water in the Pit

Day 9. 7:00 AM.

Tejasri walked toward yesterday's excavation.

She stopped.

The pit was half-filled with muddy water.

No rain.

No broken pipeline.

Only groundwater quietly seeping through the excavation.

Four workers stood nearby waiting for instructions.

"Since when has it been like this?" she asked.

"Since early morning, madam."

She immediately called Gopi.

The Question She Couldn't Answer

Gopi looked into the pit.

Then looked at Tejasri.

"What's your dewatering plan?"

She remained silent.

"Did you check the water table in the soil report?"

"No sir."

Gopi opened the investigation report.

"Page 4."

"Groundwater at 1.1 metres."

"Our excavation is 1.5 metres."

"This wasn't unexpected."

"It wasn't planned."

Building the Sump

Gopi immediately instructed the workers.

✔ Bring a submersible pump.

✔ Dig a sump pit in one corner.

✔ Make it 300 mm deeper than the footing level.

✔ Pump continuously.

Within forty minutes, the water level dropped.

The pit floor became visible again.

Tejasri stepped into the excavation.

Her boot sank into the soil.

Gopi pointed toward the footprint.

"See that?"

"Standing water has already softened the soil."

"We never place PCC on weak ground."

The Night Shift

Before leaving the site, Gopi gave one final instruction.

"The pump runs all night."

"Assign one person to monitor it."

"If the pump stops..."

"The water returns."

The next morning, the excavation remained completely dry.

Tejasri checked the bottom.

The soil was firm.

Only then did she approve PCC.

That evening she updated her excavation checklist.

Dewatering was now the first item.

🛠 Site Lesson

ItemPurpose
Water TablePredict groundwater before excavation.
Sump PitCollect seepage water.
Submersible PumpRemove groundwater continuously.
DewateringMaintain a dry, stable excavation.

📚 Key Concepts Learned

  • Water Table
  • Dewatering
  • Sump Pit
  • Submersible Pump
  • Bearing Capacity
  • Excavation Planning

⚠ Site Mistake

What Happened?

No dewatering plan was prepared before excavation.

Possible Impact

Softened soil, reduced bearing capacity, construction delays and poor foundation support.

Lesson Learned

Always check the groundwater level before excavation and prepare a dewatering plan in advance.

⭐ Golden Rule

"Water in the pit means you forgot to plan before you dug."

📅 Tomorrow in Civil Tales...

Day 10 – The Forgotten Coat

The excavation is dry.

The reinforcement is ready.

But Gopi stops the work for one missing layer beneath the footing.

  • ✔ Blinding Layer
  • ✔ Foundation Protection
  • ✔ Why PCC Comes First
