📖 Welcome to Civil Tales by CJH
For four days, Tejasri learned how to mark a building accurately.
Today she learns that even perfect execution can fail...
If the drawing is outdated.
📍 Today: Week 1 • Day 5 – The Drawing That Lied
📖 7 Min Read
📅 Week 1
📍 Day 5 of 42
🎯 Topic: GFC Drawings & Revision Control
"The most expensive mistake is building exactly what the old drawing says."
Day 5 – The Drawing That Lied
The footing excavation was complete.
Workers had started placing reinforcement.
Tejasri carefully checked the drawing in her hand.
The wall dimension showed 4500 mm.
Everything matched.
Just before approving the reinforcement, Gopi walked over.
"Which revision are you using?"
Tejasri looked confused.
"Revision?"
Gopi opened another drawing.
The same wall now measured 4300 mm.
Two drawings.
Two dimensions.
One building.
The Small Letter That Changed Everything
Tejasri compared both drawings carefully.
Only one detail had changed.
In the title block, one drawing showed Rev-01.
The other showed Rev-03.
Gopi smiled.
"Drawings don't become wrong."
"They become outdated."
"Always build from the latest approved GFC drawing."
When Drawings Don't Match
A few minutes later, Tejasri noticed something else.
The architectural drawing showed a window opening.
The structural drawing showed a beam passing through the same location.
She looked at Gopi.
"Which one should I follow?"
Gopi replied immediately.
"Neither."
"Raise an RFI."
"Request for Information."
"Never guess between two drawings."
"Clarify before you build."
The Red Stamp
Gopi picked up the old drawing.
He stamped it with one word.
SUPERSEDED
Then he looked at the team.
"Outdated drawings should never remain on site."
"One old drawing can create weeks of rework."
That evening, Tejasri organised every drawing file by revision number.
For the first time...
She understood that a Site Engineer doesn't just build structures.
She builds from the right information.
🛠 Site Lesson
| Term | Purpose |
|---|---|
| GFC Drawing | Approved drawing issued for construction. |
| Revision Number | Shows the latest approved version. |
| Revision Cloud | Highlights modified areas. |
| RFI | Used to resolve drawing conflicts before execution. |
📚 Key Concepts Learned
- GFC Drawings
- Revision Control
- Revision Cloud
- Architectural vs Structural Drawings
- RFI (Request for Information)
- Drawing Verification
⚠ Site Mistake
What Happened?
Tejasri almost approved reinforcement using an outdated drawing.
Possible Impact
Rework, delays, material wastage and increased project cost.
Lesson Learned
Always verify the latest drawing revision before starting work.
⭐ Golden Rule
"Never Build From Yesterday's Drawing."
