📖 Welcome to Civil Tales by CJH

Week 2 begins.

The layout is complete. The first concrete has cured.

Now it's time to go underground.

Today, Tejasri learns that excavation isn't just about digging to a depth shown on a drawing.

Sometimes the ground changes...

And when it does, every decision matters.

📍 Today: Week 2 • Day 8 – The Depth Decision

📅 Week 2

📍 Day 8 of 42

🎯 Topic: Excavation & Foundation Depth

"When the ground changes... your decision must change too."

Day 8 – The Depth Decision

The JCB arrived exactly at 7:00 AM.

Its bucket cut into the earth as Tejasri watched with excitement.

This was her first excavation.

She checked the depth every few minutes.

0.5 metres...

0.8 metres...

0.9 metres...

Suddenly...

CLANG!

The bucket struck solid rock.

The operator switched off the machine.

"Madam, we've hit rock."

"Should I stop?"

Tejasri opened the foundation drawing.

The required depth was 1.5 metres.

She looked at the hard rock beneath her.

"Rock is stronger than soil."

"We'll stop here."

Gopi's Question

An hour later, Gopi arrived for his site inspection.

He looked into the excavation.

Then looked at Tejasri.

"Who decided to stop at 0.9 metres?"

"I did, sir."

"Rock is stronger than soil."

Gopi smiled.

"Did the Structural Engineer approve that decision?"

Tejasri stayed silent.

"No, sir."

Gopi replied calmly.

"Construction drawings give minimum requirements."

"Changing them is an engineering decision, not a site decision."

The Rock Test

Gopi climbed into the excavation.

He picked up a hammer and struck the rock surface several times.

Two blows produced a sharp ringing sound.

The third sounded dull.

"Hear that?"

"This section is weathered."

"It looks like solid rock..."

"...but it isn't strong enough to support the footing."

Tejasri realised that appearance alone could not determine rock quality.

The Right Decision

The Structural Engineer arrived later that afternoon.

After inspecting the excavation, he marked two zones.

One area contained sound rock.

The other required additional excavation.

The weak portion was excavated to 1.2 metres until reliable rock was reached.

The engineer approved the revised foundation level in writing.

That evening, Tejasri carefully recorded every detail in the site diary.

For the first time, she understood that good engineers don't guess.

They verify.

Rock InspectionChecks whether rock is sound or weathered.
Structural Engineer ApprovalRequired before changing excavation depth.

📚 Key Concepts Learned

  • Foundation Depth
  • Sound Rock vs Weathered Rock
  • Excavation Inspection
  • Bearing Capacity
  • Engineering Approval
  • Site Documentation

⚠ Site Mistake

What Happened?

Tejasri stopped excavation after finding hard rock without consulting the Structural Engineer.

Possible Impact

Weathered rock beneath the footing could have caused uneven settlement and future structural problems.

Lesson Learned

Whenever ground conditions differ from the drawing, stop work and obtain engineering approval before proceeding.

⭐ Golden Rule

"When the ground surprises you — call the engineer, not the contractor."

📅 Tomorrow in Civil Tales...

Day 9 – Water in the Pit

The excavation is complete...

But the next morning, the entire pit is filled with water.

How do engineers keep foundations dry before concreting?

  • ✔ Water Table
  • ✔ Dewatering
  • ✔ Sump Pit
  • ✔ Submersible Pump
