📖 Welcome to Civil Tales by CJH
Yesterday, Tejasri learned that a dry excavation is the first step toward a strong foundation.
Today, the pit is ready. The reinforcement has arrived.
Everything seems perfect.
But one missing layer beneath the steel could reduce the life of the entire structure.

📅 Week 2
📍 Day 10 of 42
🎯 Topic: PCC Before Footing
"The strongest foundation begins with a layer most people never notice."
Day 10 – The Forgotten Coat
The excavation was dry.
The soil was firm.
Dewatering had worked perfectly overnight.
At 7:30 AM, Tejasri inspected the footing pit and gave clearance to proceed.
Workers lifted the pre-tied reinforcement cage and carefully lowered it into the excavation.
It landed directly on the soil with a dull thud.
Tejasri smiled.
"Good. We're ready for footing concrete."
Just then, Gopi walked toward the pit.
He looked down for a few seconds before speaking.
"Take that reinforcement out."
Everyone stopped.
Tejasri looked confused.
"Sir... why?"
What's Under the Steel?
Gopi pointed toward the bottom of the pit.
"Tell me... what is under that reinforcement?"
"The excavation is complete, sir."
"That's not what I asked."
Tejasri looked again.
The reinforcement cage was resting directly on natural soil.
Gopi continued.
"What is your bottom cover?"
She hesitated.
"Zero."
Gopi nodded.
"And what happens when reinforcement touches moist soil?"
"Corrosion."
"Exactly."
"A footing designed for fifty years can begin deteriorating much earlier because someone skipped one simple step."
The Layer Nobody Sees
The reinforcement cage was lifted out.
Workers prepared a lean concrete mix.
They poured a 75 mm thick layer across the bottom of the excavation.
The concrete was levelled carefully until the entire surface became smooth and uniform.
Tejasri watched quietly.
"Sir... what exactly is this layer?"
Gopi smiled.
"Plain Cement Concrete."
"Most people call it PCC."
"Some call it the blinding layer."
"It may look ordinary...
...but every strong foundation begins here."
"It provides a clean surface, keeps reinforcement at the correct level and prevents direct contact between steel and soil."
One More Lesson in Patience
By afternoon, the PCC looked hard.
Tejasri asked,
"Can we place the reinforcement now?"
Gopi shook his head.
"It only looks ready."
"PCC also needs time."
"Minimum twenty-four hours before placing reinforcement."
"Better if you can wait forty-eight."
"One day of patience here...
...adds decades to the life of the structure."
The next morning, Tejasri returned early.
She marked the footing outline neatly on the PCC.
Cover blocks were placed.
Only then was the reinforcement lowered into position.
Everything sat exactly where it belonged.
For the first time, she understood why engineers build in layers.
🛠 Site Lesson
| Item | Purpose |
|---|---|
| PCC (Plain Cement Concrete) | Provides a clean and level base below the footing. |
| Thickness | Generally 75 mm below footings (or as per drawings). |
| Mix | Typically M10 (1:3:6). |
| Main Purpose | Protects reinforcement from soil, provides proper cover and prevents contamination. |
📚 Key Concepts Learned

- Blinding Layer
- Foundation Preparation
- Bottom Cover
- Corrosion Prevention
- Construction Sequence
⚠ Site Mistake
What Happened?
Tejasri allowed reinforcement to be placed directly on excavated soil without PCC.
Possible Impact
Loss of bottom cover, early reinforcement corrosion, uneven footing base and contamination of fresh concrete.
Lesson Learned
No reinforcement, no formwork and no footing concrete should be placed before PCC is completed and cured.
⭐ Golden Rule
"PCC is not optional. It's the shield between your structure and the earth."
📅 Tomorrow in Civil Tales...
Day 11 – Steel That Doesn't Fit
The PCC has cured.
The reinforcement looks perfect.
But Gopi asks Tejasri to slide her hand beneath the steel.
What she doesn't feel could become tomorrow's biggest problem.
